Security and Resilience

Nottingham is uniquely positioned at the forefront of security and resilience research, integrating technical, social, and cultural dimensions to address some of the most significant challenges facing societies today. Our distinctive strength lies in understanding state threats and hybrid warfare, providing a unifying lens through which to examine how security challenges transcend traditional boundaries and intersect with vulnerabilities in information systems, energy, climate, supply chains, critical infrastructure, democratic institutions and societal cohesion, often below the threshold of armed conflict. We go beyond technical solutions to understand how disruption affects societies, organisations and communities. This interdisciplinary approach enables us to generate evidence-based insights that strengthen preparedness, resilience and recovery, helping shape policy and practice in an increasingly complex and contested world.

Interdisciplinary expertise and facilities

We have leading expertise across disciplines, allowing us to take a whole-of-society approach, including:

  • Psychology:  behavioural psychology, pathways to persuasion/radicalisation
  • Engineering: infrastructure and energy resilience, geospatial institute
  • Arts & Humanities: narrative analysis, cultural resilience

Our partnerships and facilities in the region enable us to offer a scaleable, controlled environment for real-world trials.
