Biography

Dr Frithjof Arp is Associate Professor of International Business at Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), China. Born and educated in Germany, his professional and academic career spans three continents and includes positions as Managing Director in Malaysia and Singapore (1995-2004; two companies concurrently), Australia (2004-2008) and Regional Manager Europe for a large Singapore conglomerate (1991-1995). In the latter role, he was involved in the internationalization of Singapore's government-linked service and manufacturing companies (now part of Temasek Holdings), and the promotion of Singapore's industrial parks in Suzhou and Wuxi (Jiangsu province, China) to European companies. Dr Arp's public speaking engagements include workshops, conference presentations and guest lectures on China's Special Economic Zones and Industrial Parks. Prior to joining NUBS, Dr Arp lectured at Monash University and La Trobe University, Melbourne, Australia. He assists small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from Europe, Asia and Australia with their internationalization, develops market entry and operation strategies, and offers cross-cultural negotiation assistance.

Dr. Frithjof Arp serves on the editorial review board of Asian Business & Management (Palgrave MacMillan, ABS level 2) and for Human Resource Management (Wiley, ABS level 4), Organization Studies (Sage, ABS level 4), Academy of Management Learning & Education (AoM, ABS level 4), Journal of World Business (Elsevier, ABS level 4), International Journal of Human Resource Management (Taylor & Francis, ABS level 3), Asia Pacific Journal of Human Resources (Wiley, ABS level 2), and the Journal of Global Mobility (Emerald).

In 2016, Dr. Arp ranked among the "top 10%" and, as of September 2017, among the 95th percentile of reviewers in the field of Business, Management & Accounting

Lord Dearing Award 2017 recipient Dr Arp has been made a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA, UK) in January of the same year. These recognitions highlight his sustained mentorship and guidance to colleagues over time, and follow his acceptance as Fellow of the HEA in 2015. While Fellows have to demonstrate, for example, "successful engagement in continuing professional development in relation to teaching, learning, assessment and, where appropriate, related professional practices", Senior Fellows have to provide detailed evidence of "sustained and successful co-ordination, support, supervision, management and/or mentoring of others (whether individuals and/or teams) in relation to teaching and learning". The merit Dr Arp has gained as has also helped with this recognition.

Frithjof has lectured and taught at all levels including undergraduate, postgraduate and executive education. He has developed curriculum for Master of International Business (postgraduate), Cross-cultural Communication and Negotiation (undergraduate), and International Human Resource Management (undergraduate) programmes. At NUBS, Dr Arp currently teaches modules on International Business Strategy in the undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA programs, and Research Methods in the MSc program.

Current Research

Dr Arp's research focuses on international and cross-cultural business topics. He is particularly interested in the linkage between organisational strategy and human resource management. Dr Arp's work is published in leading academic journals including the FT45-listed Human Resource Management (ABS level 4), the policy-oriented journal of the United Nations Conference on Trade & Development (UNCTAD Transnational Corporations), and journals that publish work on critical new business phenomena (such as the Journal of Global Mobility and the German Journal of Human Resource Management). He is the recipient of the Emerald 2014 JGM Outstanding Paper Award.
