Working with stakeholders to bridge the health evidence gap around access to blue and green spaces

The Nottingham Waterside Bridge is a dedicated pedestrian and cycle crossing over the River Trent, connecting the Trent Basin and Waterside regeneration area on the north bank with Lady Bay and West Bridgford on the south. Opening in June 2026, the bridge now forms part of Nottingham's wider sustainable transport and regeneration agenda and represents the first new bridge across the River Trent in Nottingham since Clifton Bridge opened in 1958.

The bridge was funded through the UK Government's Transforming Cities Fund, a scheme that promotes improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure, public spaces, and connections to the wider active travel network.

This report draws together findings from public and stakeholder involvement activities to identify key questions, opportunities, and considerations for future research. By engaging with local communities, this project ensures that the direction of future research is grounded in real-world contexts and remains steered by the communities that will be directly impacted. Ultimately, this will give us a better understanding of the health and social impacts of urban infrastructure and place-based interventions.

By bringing together community views, experiences, concerns and priorities, we have laid the foundation for future research into the Nottingham Waterside Bridge.

The next stage will explore how people use the bridge, who benefits from it, whether experiences differ across communities, and the potential influence of surrounding environments. This will help us better understand how investments in local infrastructure may support healthier, better-connected communities.
