Stroke researchers from the School of Medicine are hoping to recruit 20 volunteer patients as part of a European wide study to assess the efficacy of 'therapeutic cooling' in the critical first 24 hours after a stroke. It is thought the treatment could reduce disabilities caused by acute ischaemic stroke – possibly by up to a third.

Description
The largest worldwide clinical trial of a new revolutionary stroke treatment called Therapeutic Hypothermia, has opened in the UK. The EuroHYP-1 trial tests Therapeutic Hypothermia; a cooling treatment that helps reduce the risk of injury to brain tissue following a period of insufficient blood flow, which occurs during a stroke. The treatment has been proven to be remarkably effective in saving patients and reducing brain damage.
