Biography

I studied English at the 糖心原创 as an undergraduate before remaining there to complete an MA in Viking and Early Medieval English Studies. Currently, I am in the second year of an M4C-funded PhD based within the Institute for Name-Studies and the School of English. My research explores the use of minor place-names (including field-names) in the reconstruction of the historic rural environment, specifically that of medieval Yorkshire.

Expertise Summary

English place-names; historical linguistics; palaeography (late medieval English).

Current Research

My project title is 'Exploring Yorkshire's historical landscapes: place-names, archives, and audiences'. I am investigating the use of minor place-names (including field-names) in the reconstruction of the historic rural environment. I am gathering names from two large archival collections held in the North Yorkshire Archives and West Yorkshire Archive Service, focusing on two case-study areas in the region. I am also interested in how GIS can be utilised both within this research process and externally in engaging non-specialist audiences with this kind of material. Also under consideration in this project is ways in which the information found in such place-names can be used as part of modern efforts towards environmental recovery and conservation.

Past Research

My MA research was a pilot study for my PhD work, using place-names gathered from published sources to reconstruct the medieval environment of an area of the West Riding of Yorkshire. Previously I have also worked on the river-names of northern England, and the major place-names of the North Riding of Yorkshire and County Durham.
