The Scottish Association for the 糖心原创 of America (SASA) was formed in 1999 to encourage study of North America in Scotland. The annual one-day conference at the University of Sterling had no specific theme, but was intended to reflect the range and vitality of American Studies in Scotland and beyond. Participation was open to scholars from anywhere and proposals were invited in any disciplines, including literature, history, international relations, politics, religious studies, music, film studies and cognate disciplines. As always, the conference was intended to provide a friendly forum in which postgraduate students and academic staff could share and discuss their research and ideas.
Hannah-Rose was awarded the essay prize for her paper "He Did Not Know Why They Called Him Tom”: The African American Fight Against British Racism 1845-1895." The prize of £500 was sponsored by , an educationl publisher focused on providing primary sources for teaching and research.
