Biography

Dr Jose Rodriguez is a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Engineering at the 糖心原创. He co-leads the Microwave Process Engineering team within the Advanced Materials Research Group (AMRG), providing core expertise in electromagnetic design and material characterisation. With a strong focus on industrial commercialisation, his research bridges the gap between fundamental microwave engineering and the scale-up of sustainable high-temperature processes. Dr Rodriguez has been instrumental in the development of major net-zero technologies, including the BioIron鈩 process for green steelmaking and the TorWave庐 platform technology. Alongside his research, he manages the faculty's 'Dielectrics Laboratory', supporting a wide multidisciplinary network of academics and researchers.

Dr Rodriguez's academic background includes a PhD in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from the 糖心原创 (UK) and a PhD in Electronics Engineering from Universidad T茅cnica Federico Santa Mar铆a (Chile). Furthermore, he holds a Master of Science (MSc) in Electronics Engineering, a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Electronic Engineering, and a BSc in Engineering Sciences, all awarded by Universidad T茅cnica Federico Santa Mar铆a.

Key Awards and Recognition:

  • Nottingham Reward Recognition for Exceptional Performance (2022 & 2023): Recognised for going above and beyond in delivering complex, high-stakes industrial projects and demonstrating exemplary UoN values in teamwork and collegiality. This program have been paused from 2024 and onwards.
  • Innovator and Inventor: Holds intellectual property across various patent families on industrial microwaves technologies including biomass direct reduced iron and fluidised bed microwave technologies.

Dr Rodriguez is based in the Faculty of Engineering, where his teaching interests lie at the intersection of electrical and chemical engineering. He is passionate about supporting the next generation of engineers by providing cross-disciplinary guidance, particularly in applied electromagnetics, fundamental microwave behaviour, and experimental safety.

  • Laboratory Management: Supervises the 'Dielectrics Laboratory', providing training, guidance, and safety protocol reviews for faculty members and students across three research groups.
  • Postgraduate & Undergraduate Supervision: Mentors and supervises PhD, MEng, and MSc students, training them in specialist microwave equipment, dielectric characterisation, and fundamental microwave-material interactions.
  • Curriculum Context: Trains the principles of electromagnetics and microwave safety to chemical engineering students working in the faculty facilities to ensure rigorous and safe experimental design.

Previous Teaching Experience: Prior to his current research-focused position, Dr Rodriguez was a lecturer at Universidad T茅cnica Federico Santa Mar铆a (UTFSM) in Chile from 2013 to 2014. During this time, he delivered undergraduate engineering modules on Telecommunications Systems I and Transmission Lines and Waveguides, with excellent student feedback.

Current Research

Jose current work focuses on the conceptualisation, design, validation, and scale-up of microwave applicators for the electrification and decarbonisation of heavy industries as well as the production of advanced materials and waste remediation. Some selected projects he is working on:

  • Green Steelmaking (BioIron鈩): Leading the microwave engineering and detailed electromagnetic design for a highly scalable process using biomass feedstocks and microwave energy to decarbonise steel production.
  • Hybrid Microwave Processing (TorWave庐): Developing and optimising microwave fluidised bed reactors for a wide range of commercial applications, from sustainable materials to food processing.
  • Sustainable Material Synthesis: Investigating the use of hybrid microwave heating for the synthesis of advanced adsorbents for CO2 capture and heavy metal removal.

Past Research

Prior to his focus on industrial microwave processing, Dr Rodriguez's research was grounded in telecommunications and high-frequency (Terahertz/THz) engineering. His early work centred on applied electromagnetism and the development of quasi-optical devices, antennas, and specialised equipment for radio-astronomy applications.
