Biography

Dr Simon Toubeau is Associate Professor in the School of Politics and International Relations, where he conducts research and teaching in comparative politics, specialising in the field of territorial politics and federalism.

He obtained a PhD. in Political and Social Sciences from the European University Institute (EUI), an M.Phil in European Politics and Society from the University of Oxford and an M.A (Hons) in Economics and Politics from the University of Edinburgh. Simon was previously Research Fellow at the Centro de Estudios Pol铆ticos y Constitucionales (CEPC), the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS), the Universit茅 Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), the University of Edinburgh and the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

Simon is a member of the Nottingham Inter-Disciplinary Centre for Economic and Political Research (NICEP) and a Scientific Collaborator at the Centre d'Etude de la Vie Politique (CEVIPOL) at ULB. He was co-convener (2013-17) of the Standing Group on Regionalism and Federalism at the European Consortium of Political Research (ECPR).

Ph.D Supervision

I am interested in supervising research students that wish to work in the following areas:

  • the ways parties compete over the issue of regional authority and decentralisation
  • constitutional reforms in decentralised and federal multinational states
  • nationalist, independentist and sovereigntist parties and movements
  • regional-level policy-making and policy coordination, in particular in the face of crises (economic, public health, climate change related crises)
  • the way voters hold parties in government at different levels responsible for policy outcomes

Current Research

Simon conducts research in the field of comparative territorial politics and federalism. His research seeks to explain the causes and consequences of multi-level government. His research is organised along five main axes:

  • Party competition and decentralisation
  • The institutional evolution of decentralised and federal states
  • Sovereignty conflicts in multinational states
  • Regional public policy and policy coordination in multi-level states
  • Accountability and voting behaviour in multi-Level states
