Do you want to be at the forefront of research-based teaching and development in immunology and immunotherapeutics? What about advancing new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for fighting disease? Our Immunology and Immunotherapeutics MSc course is a research-informed programme taught by academics who are active experts in their field.

Throughout the course, you’ll develop a strong understanding of modern immunology, including the diagnosis and treatment of allergies and autoimmune diseases. The taught part of the course is supported by a project preparation skills module, to consolidate your molecular and subject-specific microbiology laboratory skills in addition to training on statistical analysis and bioinformatics. You will then complete a substantial individual research project over the summer, utilising these essential employability skills. You’ll learn to gather and analyse biological data from existing research to conduct your own evidence-based research for your dissertation and beyond.

Research project

You will design and execute a research programme aimed at solving a specific problem in immunology or immunotherapeutics

Course content

During the course, you’ll advance your knowledge and gain practical experience in modern immunology and immunotherapeutics.

​In the autumn semester, modules will give you an overview of the mechanisms and concepts of immunology, as well as the latest developments in the molecular basis of allergies and autoimmune diseases. You'll also experience essential laboratory research skills.

​The spring semester will focus on therapeutic immunology. You’ll also start to prepare for your research project with the project preparation skills module, gaining the practical and analytical skills you’ll need including a range of molecular and subject-specific immunology laboratory skills, and statistical and bioinformatics training.

​In the summer, you’ll carry out a substantial individual research project combines laboratory training, data collection and analysis and oral presentation on top of a traditional dissertation project. This will help you develop necessary skills for your own research, both for this course and your future career journey.

Core modules

Immunity and the immune system

Understand how your immune system keeps you healthy and what happens when it doesn’t. This module introduces the core concepts of immunology, from how immune cells work to how they respond to disease. You'll build a solid foundation in how the immune system functions in both health and illness. It’s a fundamental part of your immunology training. 

Molecular aspects of allergy 20 credits

Explore the science behind allergies and how your immune system reacts to allergens. This module looks in-depth into the allergic cascade, the IgE network and how allergic inflammation causes tissue damage. You will also examine why allergic diseases are becoming more common and the molecular reasons behind allergenicity, as well as learning how scientists are developing new treatments to tackle allergies through immunological interventions.   

Mechanisms of autoimmunity 20 credits

Uncover what happens when the immune system turns against the body. This module explores how immune tolerance breaks down, leading to autoimmune diseases. You'll learn about the genetic and environmental factors involved, and how immunotherapy is used to treat these conditions. Through this module, you’ll understand the science behind diseases like type 1 diabetes and lupus, and how cutting-edge treatments are being developed. 

Therapeutic immunology 20 credits

Discover how modern medicine works with the immune system to treat disease. This module explores current and future immunotherapies, from engineered antibodies and CAR-T cells to gene editing and stem cell therapies. You'll also look at how biologic drugs are used across a range of conditions, including examples of vaccines. The module provides vital insight into the future of immunological treatments. 

 

MSc Project Preparation Skills 40 credits

This module provides advanced training in contemporary research methods, including subject-specific skills. You will focus on key practical techniques and data analysis. You will develop your ability to interpret and critique experiment results, so you can apply these skills to your MSc Research Project and future scientific work.  

MSc Research Project 60 credits

This module offers an intensive research experience, enabling you to plan, execute and present a substantial project. You’ll gain practical experience in subject-specific laboratory techniques, data analysis, critical thinking and scientific communication. You’ll carry out your own research under academic supervision, write a dissertation and present your findings. It’s the culmination of your degree, equipping you with the skills to contribute to scientific innovation and preparing you for a wide range of employment opportunities or further study.

​​You’ll learn through a variety of methods including lectures, practical laboratory sessions, computer-based exercises, seminars, student-led presentations and research projects.

​For your individual research project, you'll learn how to collect and analyse data from existing research and work on a related reflective science paper review.

​There will be a range of optional seminars within the School of Life Sciences and across the university to help you become familiar with cutting-edge research and develop advanced research techniques.​

Contact time and study hours

​​As a guide, one credit equals approximately 10 hours of work. For the taught stage of the course, you will spend approximately a third of your time (around 400 hours) in lectures, tutorials, workshops, practical classes, including the directed study which is necessary in preparation for workshops/practical classes.

​The remaining time will be completed as independent study. Personal tutor meetings occur throughout the year and additional meetings can be requested as needed.​

These fees are for full-time study. If you are studying part-time, you will be charged a proportion of this fee each year (subject to inflation).
