The Observatory for Mathematical Education publishes its first Review of Mathematical Education (RoME 2025)

David Hall, Research Communications & Public Affairs Manager

The Observatory has today published its inaugural Review of Mathematical Education (RoME 2025) based on longitudinal research conducted during the 2024-25 academic year, ranging from reception to postgraduate level.

RoME 2025 marks the first in a planned series of annual reports that will grow in scale as cohorts of students are tracked through their primary, secondary or higher education. It draws on data generated by 50,000 pupils, parents, teachers and curriculum leaders within 174 primary schools, 149 secondary schools, and 42 sixth forms.

In 2024-25 data generation comprised the following:

  • Pupil surveys: multiple-choice questions on mathematics attitudes and experiences delivered in different ways dependent on the participants.
  • Teacher surveys: a range of questions on qualifications, years in teaching, working patterns and professional development (for all teachers of mathematics).
  • Pedagogy surveys: a range of questions on mathematics teaching choices including a focus on a specific lesson (for those teaching learners in Reception, Year 7, and Year 12 A level Mathematics).
  • Subject Leader surveys: a range of questions on school/college policies, curriculum choices, teacher autonomy, networks, approach to professional development, etc.
  • Parent/guardian surveys: multiple-choice questions on understanding of, and support for, their child’s mathematics learning (for learners in Reception, Year 7 and Year 12 A level Mathematics).

This review follows on from the Introductory Report, published in December 2024, and the Mathematics Pipeline report published in March 2023. We hope these insights will inform policy and practice, thereby helping to improve mathematical education across England.
