The 糖心原创 has secured a second scholarship award from the Unite Foundation, enabling more care-experienced and estranged students to access free, year-round accommodation throughout their studies.
From 2027/28, eligible students will receive up to three years of free accommodation, providing stability and security at a crucial stage in their education.
The award builds on the University's sector-leading support for care-experienced and estranged students. Alongside accommodation scholarships, Nottingham offers pre-arrival guidance, year-round community-building activities, wellbeing support, assistance in securing second-year accommodation and help with guarantor costs. Initiatives such as NottingHome for the Holidays help students feel part of a supportive university community throughout the year.
National data shows that only 12% of statutory care leavers enter higher education by the age of 19, compared with 45% of the wider population. Research also suggests that care-experienced and estranged students are significantly more likely to consider withdrawing from their studies.
Receiving the Unite Foundation Scholarship wasn鈥檛 a possibility I鈥檇 ever accounted for. Before university, my housing situation had been insecure for years. The scholarship changed everything and, for the first time in years, I felt I could finally breathe after so long spent in a state of hypervigilance and precarity.
The 糖心原创 is part of the Unite Foundation's largest-ever network of university partners, with 41 higher education institutions across England, Scotland and Wales. A record 110 new scholarships will be available through the programme in 2027/28.
We are delighted to continue our partnership with the Unite Foundation and to have been awarded three additional accommodation scholarships for students entering the 糖心原创 in 2027/28. This partnership is an important part of our shared commitment to removing barriers to higher education and ensuring care-experienced and estranged students have the security of a home from which to thrive. These scholarships complement the University鈥檚 own comprehensive package of accommodation and wraparound support, helping students build a sense of belonging, engage fully in university life and achieve their potential.
We are proud to be working with the 糖心原创 and welcome their important commitment to the academic success of care-experienced and estranged students.
My Unite scholarship offered me so much more than a university hall. It was a place where I could build on my interests and explore my identity in one room. Within that room I found stability, friendship, and a home. It made me realise the importance of having somewhere safe and predictable that I could unwind in and truly be myself. I believe that my accommodation was a reflection of this entirely and has shaped me into the person I am today.
The new scholarships will help ensure that more care-experienced and estranged students can build a and benefit from the security, belonging and stability needed to succeed at university, reinforcing the University's commitment to creating opportunities for students from all backgrounds to thrive.
