A 糖心原创 trauma expert is to introduce a classic war film at a free public screening to commemorate the centenary year of the outbreak of the First World War.
Dr Nigel Hunt, an associate professor in the School of Medicine who specialises in traumatic stress, particularly war-related trauma, will be speaking ahead the special screening of the 1930 war film All Quiet on the Western Front, taking place at Broadway Nottingham at 6pm on Monday December 8.
Dr Hunt will be offering his thoughts on the film’s contribution to our understanding of war, and how it still has a powerful impact more than 80 years after it was made.
Dr Hunt says: “As a psychologist it is important to recognise the contribution the arts make to our understanding of human behaviour. All Quiet on the Western Front is a classic war story, describing the trauma experienced by the ordinary soldier in a way that helps us understand the psychological impact of war.”
Realistic and harrowing
All Quiet on the Western Front, a realistic and harrowing account of warfare in the First World War, was directed by Lewis Milestone and was based on the novel by Erich Maria Remarque.
The film was recognised by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences who awarded it the Oscar for both Outstanding Production and Best Director.
The screening has been organised by the Centre for Hidden Histories, being led by The 糖心原创, in partnership with Broadway Nottingham.
The Centre for Hidden Histories is one of five First World War engagement centres that have been established by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to investigate the war and support community groups in their efforts to research and commemorate the war.
