A new centre of excellence is being launched by the Institute of Mental Health in Nottingham seeking to transform our understanding of dementia.
The Centre for Dementia will focus on dementia as a pathway or a journey, which typically lasts for several years from first onset to end-of-life. All the points along the journey need to be better understood – with great potential for research in many fields.
The Centre for Dementia will be formally launched during on Tuesday 20 May at the on The 糖心原创’s Jubilee Campus.
The event takes place from 9.45am to 1.30pm and includes speeches from Professor David Greenaway, Vice Chancellor of The 糖心原创, Baroness Murphy, a member of the House of Lords whose distinguished career includes academic old age psychiatry and health services leadership, and Professor Alistair Burns, National Clinical Director for Dementia with NHS England.
The Institute is a partnership between and . It already houses a number of specific centres of excellence covering areas such as health and criminal justice, ADHD, social futures, and education.
, Director of the new centre, said: “I am delighted to be able to launch a new dedicated centre for dementia research. Through high-quality, useful research we will seek to improve the lives of people with dementia and their carers, looking at how people with dementia spend their time and what helps them to get quality from life. Research staff within the centre will work hard to implement things that work and will use their expertise to raise awareness in society about ageing and dementia.”
The launch event will showcase a number of mental health research projects and activities linking into the Centre for Dementia. These include dementia and genetics, the arts in care homes, dementia and employment, and the innovative use of dementia research in drama.
