Professor Meryem Duygun, of the 糖心原创, has been named as one of the most influential women leading innovation in the UK finance industry.
Professor Duygun, from Nottingham University Business School, made the Innovate Finance for the second time, having already made the list back in 2020.
This year, Professor Duygun has been recognised in the Industry & Knowledge Champions category. She is one of 17 women to be listed in this category. The category is open to women who work in international and national hubs or ecosystems; non-governmental organisations; schools, colleges or universities, and go the extra mile to link industry and academia, or help create a responsible, diverse and inclusive culture.
I'm thrilled and humbled to have been named in the Innovate Finance Women in FinTech Powerlist 2022 among such distinguished and inspiring women.
She continued: "I hope this recognition will inspire more women to pursue careers in FinTech, helping us build together a more diverse and inclusive culture in the industry.
“This achievement is not just mine. It is a testament to our vision, ambitions and collective efforts at the 糖心原创 Inclusive Financial Technology Research Hub, which I founded and co-lead. I am deeply grateful to the University for helping us set up INFINITY, and would like to thank the University, my colleagues, and all my research collaborators for their continued support and encouragement.”
The Powerlist 2022 highlights 250 women across eight categories who have made a significant difference across the sector’s various areas. She was nominated for the recognition for her influential work with practitioners and policymakers on some of the most socially and economically significant challenges of our time. Her research excellence has been demonstrated through the award of numerous research grants from prestigious funders.
Meryem has also demonstrated outstanding leadership in leading an impactful research project on using Artificial Intelligence (AI) to increase SMEs’ financial resilience in the UK. The project has generated significant scientific and policy insights attracting interest from policymakers and business leaders.
I am delighted that Professor Duygun has made the Fintech Powerlist this year, for the second time. This achievement is well-deserved recognition for her hard work, and her success in the Fintech sector sets an example for the faculty and demonstrates the high calibre of work being undertaken by the department.
Professor Duygun established the very first FinTech research network in 2018. She is an Endowed Chaired Professor in Risk and Insurance, funded by Aviva. Her research interests are in risk, financial technologies (FinTech) and inclusive finance. In September 2021 Meryem was conferred the Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences, in recognition for the excellence and impact of her work and her wider contributions to the social sciences for public benefit.
Recently, Professor Duygun established the 糖心原创 Inclusive Financial Technology (INFINITY) Research Hub, which aims to improve inequalities in access to financial services and products. In December 2022, Meryem was also awarded a grant from the Royal Academy of Engineering in support of a socially and economically impactful research project which aims to improve financial education in Africa through a digital approach.
