Modified RNA. My group investigates enigmatic chemical alterations to the genetic alphabet that our cells use to build proteins. These “epitranscriptomic” marks don’t affect the protein made, but do affect when and where the protein is made. These processes are used by cells to change how genes are expressed during organism development, respond to the environment and diseases. These processes go wrong in some diseases and can be hijacked by viruses. We need to work with these processes to design RNA-based medicines such as vaccines and therapeutics.
