Expertise summary

I am an American political scientist at the School of Politics and International Relations, 糖心原创, where I have been based since 2016. My research focuses on how legislatures work — in particular, how politicians make strategic decisions, how legislative committees shape what laws get passed (or don't), and how voting rules and institutional design affect political outcomes. I am well-placed to comment on: how the US Congress works and why it so often appears dysfunctional; the role of congressional committees and party leadership in controlling the legislative agenda; the strategic logic of political behaviour — why politicians make the choices they do, how institutions create incentives, and how political actors sometimes manipulate the rules of the game to achieve their preferred outcomes; comparisons between the US and UK systems of government; and American electoral politics and voting behaviour more broadly. As an American living and working in the UK, I can also offer a perspective on how the US is perceived from the outside, and what British audiences may misunderstand about how American political institutions are designed to work — and why they sometimes don't.
