Sumaiyah has expertise on international human rights law, particularly freedom of religion, gender equality and non-discrimination. She also has expertise on Muslim women's veiling practices (the burqa/hijab etc.) Her research looks at bans on Muslim women's clothing, arguing that the law fails to understand Muslim women's spirituality, leading to concerns for spiritual equality that have not yet been recognised.
