Biography

Dr. Shihning Chou, Registered Practitioner Psychologist (Forensic), is Associate Professor of Forensic Psychology based in the Injury Epidemiology and Prevention Research Group in the Centre for Academic Primary Care at the 糖心原创. She was the Academic Consultant for the Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Corporate Safeguarding Team Senior Leadership Programme.

She obtained her BSc (Hons) in Psychology and MSc in Forensic Psychology Practice from the University of Birmingham. She completed her PhD at the University of Liverpool.

After getting her MSc, Dr Chou worked as a research associate at the University of Birmingham and the University of Liverpool. She also worked as a school instructor at the University of Birmingham, organising the module and delivering the teaching on systematic review methods and advising on forensic psychology doctorate review projects.

She was the Focal Point for the former World Health Organization Collaborating Centre in Child Care and Protection at the University of Birmingham for 2 years.

After joining the 糖心原创, Dr Chou jointly set up the Professional Doctorate in Forensic Psychology and MSc Forensic & Criminological Psychology.

Over the years, Dr Chou has carried out research on international adoption and its association with deinstitutionalisation of children; child abandonment and its prevention, parenting, and the impact of childhood victimisation.

Research Summary

Principal Investigator for NIHR SPCR funded project - Violence & Abuse against General Practice Staff

Main interests: Understanding the development of violence, victimisation and vulnerability;

Preventing violence and violence- / victimisation-related injuries and trauma;

Promoting survivors' wellbeing.

Specific areas:

  • Childhood maltreatment, elder mistreatment and child to parent abuse;
  • Resilience and wellbeing among abuse survivors;
  • Violence and abuse by clients in healthcare settings and its prevention;
  • Staff burnout and wellbeing in health, care and forensic settings;
  • Bullying, harassment and discrimination in the workplace;
  • Mental health in minority population and equity in access to health and social care
