Biography

Eleni Michalopoulou is the team Leader of the Digital Cancer Screening Research Group. After graduating from the Department of Psychology at the University of Athens, she obtained a master degree in 'Stress and Health Promotion' from Medical School of Athens. She completed several research training programmes before receiving her second master degree in 'Health Psychology' from the University of Derby.

During her early career, she was a member of several public organisations being responsible for the delivery of a number of psychologically-based interventions to improve health and wellbeing (i.e. smoking cessation, drug rehabilitation, management of mild-moderate mental health issues).

Eleni became a member of the Digital Cancer Screening Reserach Group in 2019 and get involved in two major quality assurance projects - PERFORMS and MyPeBS- related to breast cancer.

Current Research

Eleni's research focuses on human and machine performance evaluations in medical imaging applications in their widest sense, using visual search and computer science techniques. She is the Team Leader of two major research projects, the MyPeBS international clinical study and the PERFORMS External Quality Assurance scheme.

MyPeBS research study compares the current standard breast screening with a personalised strategy that is based on the personal risk of developing breast cancer for each individual woman. The PERFORMS educational self-assessment and training scheme monitors breast screening readers' image interpretation performance using appropriate actions according to the Royal College of Radiology guidelines.

Eleni provides quality assessment to confirm that trial radiologists are reporting breast screening cases at a suitable level of screening accuracy and ensure that they all are of an equivalent international standard.

She also designed the PRISM (PRostate Imaging Self-assessment and Mentoring) scheme, a web-based self-assessment and continuous learning platform that enhances trainees' recognition of normal, benign and malignant prostate appearances and scientifically evaluates their image reading performance.
