Current Research

Ben Ollivere is leading global researcher (SciVal top 1% of researchers 4 topics, top 5% 14 topics: 2022 FW citations 3.99, FW views 13.9). He exerts a major scientific influence on trauma injury and recovery, specifically outcomes, interventions, and their underlying mechanisms. He holds a personal grant portfolio valued at 拢61.7M (拢9.7M as Co-I) spanning discovery, experimental, translational and applied spectra. His industry collaborations have resulted in spinouts, grants and first in man studies.

His research is thematic and applied; targeting life-course inequalities, particularly in key subpopulations (PMID:36424690;32475240;34779791), focussed on frailty and recovery in hip fracture, chest wall injury and upper limb trauma. For example in chest trauma (afflicting 20% of those with major injury) he led on national guidelines, to standardised access to chest wall fixation. Substantial underpinning research (PMID:27482027;30418334;31353094;35638213) has defined outcome measures, optimised analgesia, increased efficacy andunderpinning biological mechanism. Mortality is reduced by over 70% (PMID:35638213) in those stabilised (10-fold improvement).

He has had significant innovation impact, e.g. 3 patents (WO2021142213A1; WO2021173931A1; WO2023091366A1) for surgical devices (benefitting 10,000+ annually). Whilst still a trainee surgeon he was first to identify risk factors for metallosis (PMID:19651828) informing the issue of MHRA safety notices (MDA/2012/036). During Covid-19 he led the MRC Panther programme (studying healthcare workers), briefed SAGE, and was an expert to the medical All Party Parliamentary Group. These outputs supported the introduction of the covid vaccination booster programme (PMID:34376569).

As Associate Faculty Pro Vice-Chancellor he has engaged in national research direction (NIHR Commissioning Board, Medical Schools Council Research Board and Royal College of Physicians Falls and Frailty Programme) and internationally (advisor Finland Research Council, UK-China Medical Alliance). In training and education as regional Health Education England academic programme designed assessment, mentorship and appraisal process (100 academic trainees annually).

His research excellence is recognised through his NIHR Senior Investigator award and 'theme lead' his 'theme lead' status with the 28M Nottingham Biomedical Research Centre.
