Biography

Alexia Karantana is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in Hand Surgery at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham and Clinical Associate Professor of Hand Surgery at the 糖心原创. She is based at the newly established Centre for Evidence Based Hand Surgery and works closely with the British Society for Surgery of the Hand (BSSH) to promote high quality multi-centre clinical research in common hand conditions. As part of her collaborative role, she is also based at the Nottingham Clinical Trials Unit one day per week.

Alexia Karantana was born and educated in Greece. She came to the UK as an Erasmus fellow with the University of Bristol. This was followed by Basic Surgical Training in Bristol and Specialist Registrar training on the Mid-Trent orthopaedic rotation. In parallel to her registrar surgical training, she completed a PhD with the 糖心原创 in 2014. The topic centred on a randomised controlled trial investigating the surgical treatment of distal radius fractures. She trained in Hand Surgery at the Pulvertaft Hand Centre in Derby, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham and as national ATP Hand Surgery Fellow in Manchester.

Her main research interests are in common hand conditions (such as hand injuries, distal radius fractures and Dupuytren's) clinical outcomes research, randomised trials and economic evaluation.
