Biography

I completed my Undergraduate degree in Psychology at the University of Leicester, before studying for a PG Cert in Psychological Therapies at the 糖心原创, an MRes in Clinical Psychology at the University of Birmingham, and a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology at the University of Sheffield. I recently completed a PGCHE at the 糖心原创.

I am an HCPC-registered clinical psychologist, Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society, and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. I have worked with children and families in inpatient, community, and third sector settings since qualification, mainly with young people who have an Intellectual Disability (ID) and/or other neurodevelopmental conditions.

Expertise Summary

Through my clinical work, I have developed a particular interest in relational and developmental approaches, and have helped to adapt a family therapy approach for parents where a child has an ID or autism (Hudson, Dallos, & McKenzie, 2017; Hudson, 2023). I have received foundational accreditation in Theraplay and trained with Prof. Paula Sterkenburg on assessing and treating severe attachment difficulties in children with ID (the ITAB model). In my clinical role, I lead a specialist Autism assessment clinic.

I am a member of the NEED special interest group within the EAMHID and collaborate with European colleagues on developing a measure of emotional development in people with ID - the SED-S. This has recently resulted in a book on the Emotional Development approach in ID, which I co-authored with two German colleagues (Sappok, Zepperitz & Hudson, 2021). I have also acted acted as a reviewer for Advances in Autism, Human Systems, and the Journal of Intellectual and Developmental Disability.

I am currently External Examiner for the MSc in Attachment Theory, Research and Practice at The University of Roehampton.

Current Research

I supervise several DClinPsy projects, which have a theme of supporting parents of children with neurodevelopmental problems, particularly ID and ASD. Current projects include examining the effect of different formulations on attributions towards challenging behaviour, exploring the role of reflective functioning in relation to parenting stress, and developing compassion-focused self help materials.

I am also co-supervising a PhD student, who is conducting a number of studies exploring the links between attachment orientations and trauma symptoms in domestic violence survivors (Sema Altuntas).

Past Research

I have completed research focused on the awareness of physical activity issues amongst clinical psychology trainees; outcome measurement in systemic family therapy practice; the introduction of Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs) into physical health settings, and the role of self-compassion in adjustment to long-term physical conditions. My doctoral thesis examined the effectiveness of a compassion-focused, guided self-help intervention for people with skin conditions, in a feasibility randomised controlled trial.

Future Research

I am interested in supervising projects related to the assessment of attachment and emotional development in people with an intellectual disability/autism and their families.
