Charging batteries faster: ions, electric fields and data

Project description

How fast a phone or car battery can charge without damage is decided deep inside its electrodes. These are porous solids soaked in a liquid, and charging means driving charged particles through that maze while an electric field pulls on them. The equations are ones you know: a diffusion equation for each kind of ion, Poisson's equation for the electric potential, and a reaction at the surface of the solid. Solving them on the real microstructure is possible but slow. The models inside battery management software are much simpler ODEs with a handful of parameters fitted to voltage measurements, often used outside the regime they were derived for. This project connects the two ends. You will derive reduced models from the detailed equations using asymptotics and homogenisation, test them against our OpenFOAM solver for charged-particle transport, and combine equations with measured data to find out which parameters a voltage curve can really tell you. There is potential to collaborate with Breathe Battery Technologies.
