Twenty-six young women were welcomed by the School of Mathematical Sciences in the w/c 29th June for mathematical workshops, talks, games, projects and networking, as part of the 'Women in Maths & AI Experience Week'. The event was funded within the Degrees for the Future Grant, which the School was awarded for its programme on 'Mathematics in the age of AI'. As such, in addition to developing their mathematical skills and knowledge, these budding mathematicians were also shown how the mathematical tools they were learning about often linked directly to the development and use of AI. The week of activities was varied in both content, form and personnel: 16 different lecturers from Mathematical Sciences helped to deliver it, fewer than half male, along with 10 undergraduate ambassadors who joined in with activities and explained to the attendees about what it's like to study maths at university.
Additionally, we had a problem solving session hosted by the AMSP, a talk from a degree apprentice, and one of our PhD students told us about her journey in Maths. At the end of the week, the participants becomes the lecturers! They delivered talks in the Keighton Auditorium, building upon topics they'd worked on across the week. The topics included probabilities in casino games, language analysis, coding in Python, black holes, diagonalisation of matrices, the future of maths and using AI safely. Feedback from attendees was highly positive, with many saying how the format, aims and range of topics had helped to make the event memorable and enjoyable. The attendees also reported now understanding much better how mathematics and AI were linked.
