Related family members
Thomas was the younger son of Robert Thoroton of Car Colston, and brother of Dr Robert Thoroton, the Nottinghamshire historian. He was a London corn-chandler, described as a 'citizen and salter'. He bought some land in Screveton, the neighbouring village to Car Colston, in 1669. In 1685 he bought Kirketon Hall and the manor of Screveton from Peniston Whalley. Kirketon Hall was later known as Screveton Hall and became the home of the Thorotons, although Thomas and his son of the same name mainly lived elsewhere. He also owned property in Haymarket in London, and the Nag's Head Inn near Covent Garden.
