Biography

Dr Marianthi Pappa possesses a diverse background in legal practice and academic research. She holds an LLB (Hons) from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, along with an LLM in Oil & Gas Law and a PhD in International Law of the Sea, both from the University of Aberdeen. She has practiced law in Greece and Cyprus, consulting individuals and multinational corporations operating in the fields of finance and energy.

Dr Pappa joined the 糖心原创 Law School in 2018. She teaches 'Introduction to Law and Legal Theory' at Undergraduate level, and is convenor of the LLM modules 'Introduction to Energy Law' and 'International Law of the Sea'. She is co-director of the Law School's Equality, Diversity, Inclusion and People Committee, and personal tutor to UG students of all years. Marianthi has previously acted as convenor of the Postgraduate Research Seminar Series, coordinator of the PhD peer-mentoring scheme, and deputy senior tutor.

Expertise Summary

Dr Pappa specializes in: international law of the sea and ocean governance, public international law, energy and natural resources law. She is particularly interested in the interplay between different areas of law and the interaction of law with other disciplines. Her research methods include: doctrinal analysis, legal comparison, and empiricism. She also delivers workshops to governmental and business organisations on boundary disputes and energy law.

Marianthi publishes regularly in peer-reviewed journals and books. Her monograph was published by Cambridge University Press.

Dr Pappa is currently participating in an interdisciplinary project that seeks to transform schools within low-income suburban communities in Nairobi into clean energy hubs. Funded with 拢300,000 by 's Energy Catalyst Round 9, the feasibility study was conducted during March 2023-April 2024 by a project team made up of experts from the 糖心原创, , and FWD London, with the support of Nairobi-based . In October 2024, the project received a further 拢3,000.000 from the Ayrton Challenge Programme for the duration of 3 years. African SCENe addresses 13 and has the potential to significantly improve lives not only in Kenya but also in many low-income communities across the world.
