Biography
Christopher Markou joined the 糖心原创 in May 2026. He was previously a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at The Faculy of Law, University of Cambridge, and visiting lecturer in Law and the Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College London. Christopher received his PhD in Law at the University of Cambridge, an LLB (1st) from The University of Manchester, and a Hon. BA and MA in History and Philosophy of Science from The University of Toronto. Christopher's work has been published in journals such as Cross-Disciplinary Journal in Law and Computation, The Northern Ireland Law Quarterly, and has forthcoming works appearing in the International Review of Law, Computers and Technology and Law, Innovation and Technology. He is the co-editor of Is Law Computable: Critical Perspectives on Law and Artificial Intelligence (Hart 2022) and his work has appeared in mainstream outlets such as Wired, Scientific American, and Newsweek. He is currently working on the monograph Lex Ex Machina: From Rule of Law to Legal Singularity, which traces the intellectual and ideological history of quantification and computational reasoning in law.

Past Research
Christopher Markou's earlier research, developed primarily during his time at Cambridge in collaboration with Simon Deakin, examined the foundational question of whether law is susceptible to computational replication, exploring the limits of machine learning as a means of modelling legal reasoning and adjudication. That work engaged directly with the use of machine learning to replicate aspects of legal decision-making, including litigation risk modelling, predictive policing, and adjudication. It culminated in the edited collection Is Law Computable? Critical Perspectives on Law and Artificial Intelligence (Hart, 2022) and a series of co-authored articles, including work approaching interpretability in AI and law through evolutionary theory, understanding machine learning as a form of iterative, environment-constituting "direct fitting." His Leverhulme-funded project "Artificial Intelligence and Legal Evolution" extended this into questions about how AI and big data are changing legal practice, education, and the conceptual foundations of the legal system. Throughout, the through-line has been a systems-theoretical and jurisprudential concern: not merely the governance of AI, but what AI's encroachment into law reveals about law's own nature and limits.
