What is your background?

I have my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in surveying and geoinformatics from Nigeria. My research background focuses on geospatial analysis, geodetic science, and earth observation (marine and geological surveying). In my master’s thesis I developed a computation tool for the optimum conversion of space rectangular and curvilinear coordinates.

Tell us about your PhD research

My PhD is in Positioning, Navigation and Earth Observation (Nottingham Geospatial Institute research group) in the Faculty of Engineering. My research focuses on the application of multibeam echosounder (MBES) bathymetry and backscatter data for seafloor morphology and substrate classification in the Atlantic Ocean offshore Lagos, Nigeria, for mineral prospectivity mapping. The research aims to contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 to conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources while offering valuable insight to support the sustainable development of the nation’s blue economy.

What’s been your favourite thing about your PhD so far?

The favourite thing for me is the opportunity to expand knowledge, acquire new skills, connect with a diverse community, and further my career and professional growth.

What is something that has surprised you about doing a PhD?

The surprising thing for me about a PhD is how things can play out. One time you are having a smooth headway in the research, at another time the research seems stuck, and boom you get headway again. Honestly a PhD requires intelligence combined with resilience and continuous learning.

What attracted you to study for your PhD at the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´?

The ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ has a strong academic reputation, and it provides a high standard of educational value. Particularly the Positioning, Navigation and Earth Observation programme attracted me the most because it aligns closely with my research background, field of interest, and long term career aspirations.

What advice would you give to someone considering doing a PhD?

If you want to do a PhD ensure you are clear about your motivation because doing a PhD requires long-term commitment, so it is important to be genuinely interested in your research topic. Also develop resilience and good time-management habits and be prepared.
