Biography

I am an Assistant Professor in the Human Factors Research Group at the ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ and Deputy Head of HFRG. I held an Anne McLaren (Nottingham) Research Fellowship between 2013 and 2020 and moved into an academic role in February 2020. My academic background is in usability evaluation, Human Factors methods and HCI and I have applied this knowledge in a variety of domains, including transport, sociotechnical systems, and aviation.

I was awarded an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) in 2012 from the University of Southampton. My EngD research focussed on the usability of in-vehicle interfaces and Ergonomics evaluation methods and was sponsored by Jaguar Land Rover. I also have a BSc in Ergonomics (Hons) from Loughborough University.

Expertise Summary

My research interests include driver behaviour, vehicle automation, human-computer interaction, usability, and HF/Ergonomics methods. I have a specific interest in Transport, covering multiple domains including road, aviation, maritime and rail.

Teaching Summary

Module Convener:

MMME4084 Simulation, Virtual Reality and Advanced Human Machine Interfaces (Autumn Semester) - Human Factors perspectives on new technologies for simulation.

MMME4057 Human Computer Systems (Spring Semester) - a practical module following the Human-Centred Design Cycle, teaching theories and methods to support user-centred design and evaluation of products.

MMME4083 Human Factors in Interactive Systems (Distance Learning, whole year) - introduction to HF/E theories and methods underlying human interactions with products and systems.

Current Research

ServCity (Innovate UK, 30 months) - Through simulation, end-user experience research and real-world testing, the ServCity project will inform how cities can exploit the potential of autonomous mobility solutions and accelerate their deployment.

I am currently involved in research projects with industry on social interaction impacts for semi-autonomous vehicles, fatigue monitoring in drivers, and ambient in-vehicle displays.

I supervise 7 PhD students conducting research into teleoperation of autonomous vehicles, attention in driving, driver monitoring, novel HMIs and interaction methods.

Past Research

'PROSPECT' (PROactive Safety for PEdestrians and CyclisTs) - EU Horizon: RIA - Research and Innovation action - Development of next generation active safety systems for protecting vulnerable road users (VRU), in particular pedestrians and cyclists.

'ALICIA' (All Condition Operations and Innovative Cockpit Infrastructure) Project - EU Seventh Framework - Evaluation of flight deck display concepts and pilot-flight deck interaction.

Defence Human Capability Science and Technology Centre (DHCSTC) - Evaluation of methods for assessing safety in Military Systems of Systems (SoS).

Future Research

I am actively seeking research opportunities to investigate the human aspects of remote operation of road vehicles. I am developing a simulation facility to support this work.

I am also interested in being involved in any research focussing on the HF aspects of transport systems, including autonomous vehicles, novel technologies, and human-AI teams.
