Biography

Stef joined the School of Education in 2003 and is currently Deputy Head of School with a focus on People and Culture.

Stef is Chair of UCET (The Universities Council for the Education of Teachers) and co-chair of the Russell Group ITE Network.

Having taught mathematics in middle and secondary schools, Stef spent several years as a consultant and INSET provider working with primary and secondary teachers nationally and internationally and writing and reviewing teaching and learning materials for teachers of mathematics before joining the School of Education.

Stef was the Director of Initial Teacher Education from 2016 to 2023. She has led on a variety of innovations across the UoN ITE Partnership, including, developing our Primary PGCE programme and our Postgraduate Certificate in Mentoring Beginning Teachers. Stef is leading on the development of our Teacher Degree Apprenticeship, due to start in September 2025.

Stef set up a regional Equality, Diversity and Equity Network for local ITE providers and led on the development of a regional EDI Pledge.

In 2010 and 2022 Stef was awarded the Lord Dearing Award for Teaching and Learning.

Research Summary

Stefanie's main area of research interest is initial teacher education and the design of effective ITE programmes and pedagogies.

Stefanie is particularly interested in: exploring how to develop beginning teachers' knowledge, skills and attitudes; the development of professional identity in the ITE year; mentoring and coaching beginning teachers. Stef is also interested in developing appropriate induction programmes for university teacher educators.
