A new article by Emeritus Professor W John Morgan, looks at higher education in Russia and the return ideology.
What is an ideology? This is a vexed question and a core aspect of political and, especially, Marxist theory, with a voluminous literature. The latter argues that ideology is the product of false consciousness. Yet, as Seligerconcludes: ‘History provides no grounds for imagining any kind of viable political system in which people with different social backgrounds (and different personality structures) cannot agree among themselves on anything ofpolitical and social importance’(Seliger 1977, p. 203). This is not the place to consider these debates in detail. Suffice it to say that an ideology is: ‘Any wide-ranging system of beliefs that provide the foundation programmesof political and social action: an ideology is a conceptual scheme with a practical application’ (Blackburn, 1996, 185).
