Rozana AlBanawi, an EdD doctoral candidate in the School of Education and a postgraduate member of the Centre for International Education Research (CIER), recently delivered an interactive keynote at the headquarters of the General Organization for Social Insurance. The 90-minute session explored lifelong learning as a foundational personal investment.
The keynote drew on Ms AlBanawi’s doctoral research into the connections between lifelong learning, personal growth and third spaces. She discussed how learning can offer more than a route to employment or career development. It can also strengthen self-efficacy, support personal development and improve people’s quality of life. Her reflections included experiences from her earlier work as an employment adviser with female job seekers.
Participants contributed examples from their own lives. These ranged from learning practical and creative activities, such as making car batteries, hair styling, crochet and sewing, to pursuing learning connected with workplace goals. The discussion also considered how community spaces and self-directed learning can help adults build connections, take part in new activities and continue learning throughout their lives.
The session gave Ms AlBanawi an opportunity to share her developing research with a wider audience while encouraging participants to reflect on lifelong learning in their own lives.
