Learn more about freedom of speech

Wednesday, 07 October 2026
Spare 20 minutes to learn about your rights and responsibilities around freedom of speech.

This module explains your rights and responsibilities around lawful speech, how to engage with views you disagree with and where to find information or raise a concern.

Freedom of speech protects the expression of lawful ideas and opinions, including views others may find controversial or uncomfortable. In addition to this, E6 is the Office for Students’ condition on harassment and sexual misconduct. It requires universities to give significant weight to lawful freedom of speech and academic freedom when applying their policies.

The module is available to all current students and takes approximately 20 minutes to complete.

There is no firm deadline for completion but you are encouraged to complete the module as soon as possible.

The University’s Code of Practice has more information, and students can contact freespeech@nottingham.ac.uk for advice.
