’Buddy’ is another word for ‘friend’ and by joining the programme, you will receive one-to-one support from a current student, as well as access to fun monthly social events for one whole semester.

They can help by:

• offering advice based on their experiences
• introducing you to relevant university services
• informing you of societies and events
• recommending local facilities and attractions

Buddies cannot provide you with academic or mental health support, but they will put you in touch with services that can.

For academic peer support, you should view your module information pages on Moodle or ask your personal tutor (you will need to have completed online registration and activated your IT account to access Moodle).

How do I request a Buddy?

Where possible, we aim to match new students to mentors studying a similar subject to them. You may also state a preference based on characteristics such as:

• LGBTQ+ identity
• Faith, ethnic or cultural background
• Care leaver or estranged student status
• Mature student status

Once you have been paired with a buddy, you will receive an introductory email from them before starting your course.

You can decide with your buddy how you wish to be contacted and you will hear from them every one to two weeks.

Conversations with your buddy will remain private. Confidentiality will only be broken in line with our safeguarding policy.

Before closing your mentoring relationship in January, your buddy will give you the chance to ask any final questions.

What do I do if my buddy hasn't contacted me?

If you haven't heard from them by Friday 11 September, please check your junk or spam folder in the first instance.

If you are still unable to find an email, please contact us.

If you have any other questions about the programme, please get in touch.
