Description

Join Dr Helena Schrader (historian and award-winning novelist) for a discussion about their talk Sparta Reconsidered: Countering Myths and Misinformation with Common Sense in the Novels of Helena P. Schrader

Summary:

Dr. Schrader’s novels set in Ancient Sparta challenge conventional portrayals of Sparta as a brutal and illiterate society. They offer a more nuanced interpretation based on ancient sources and common sense. Dr. Schrader outlines how her research, particularly about Spartan women, induced her to confront the popular myths in a series of novels. She gives examples of how logic and an understanding of human nature can fill in gaps in the historical record. Time permitting, she will read excerpts from one or more of her Sparta novels.

All are very welcome. Free to attend.

Discussants:

(historian and award-winning novelist)

Dr Lynn Fotheringham (糖心原创)

(Mayor of Sparti)
