On Sunday 5 July 2026, the Nottingham Confucius Institute (NCI) welcomed around 30 Mandarin teachers from across the region to the Si Yuan Centre at the 糖心原创's Jubilee Campus for its annual Local Teacher Training event. Designed to support the continuing professional development of Mandarin teachers, the event provided a valuable opportunity to explore current teaching approaches, exchange best practice and strengthen professional networks.

The event was opened by Ying Chen, NCI Chinese Director, who welcomed participants before introducing a programme of expert-led sessions focused on effective language teaching.

The first session, 'Adaptive Teaching – an MFL Classroom for All', was delivered by Nick Brown, an experienced Head of Languages, senior examiner and assistant headteacher. Drawing on more than two decades of experience, Nick shared practical strategies for creating inclusive language classrooms that enable every learner to thrive, including those with special educational needs (SEN). Participants left with a range of practical techniques to foster positive classroom environments and support learner engagement.

The second session, 'Teaching Writing Skills in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (TCFL)', was presented by Dr Lily Chen, who explored effective approaches to developing Chinese writing skills. Introducing the process-writing approach, Dr Chen demonstrated practical strategies to support learners at different stages of writing development while integrating linguistic progress with cultural understanding.

Following the two presentations, participants joined parallel discussion groups, where they exchanged classroom experiences, explored common teaching challenges and shared practical ideas for enhancing Mandarin teaching. The event concluded with a networking lunch, giving participants the opportunity to continue discussions and build professional relationships in an informal and friendly setting.
