Friday 20 March saw over 40 staff, students, and local residents gather at the Nottingham Confucius Institute for the final Mandarin Corner of the spring term—a fun and fascinating deep dive into Chinese Zodiacs and Personality.
Guest speaker Dr. Wang Weiqun, Associate Professor at the 糖心原创's Language Centre, delivered a lively overview of the twelve zodiac signs, covering their origins, evolution, and related folk tales. She also introduced the traditional Chinese calendar system of Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches. Drawing thoughtful comparisons with Western astrology, Dr. Wang helped participants gain a cross-cultural perspective on personality traits and symbolic meanings. Attendees eagerly calculated their own zodiac signs and those of their family members, sparking a lively atmosphere where learning unfolded naturally through interaction.
Following the talk, host Gao Jingyao led a series of fun games, including zodiac-themed riddles that paired the twelve animals with popular cultural icons. Participants enthusiastically identified zodiac traits and related vocabulary, reinforcing what they had learned in an engaging and memorable way. Laughter and applause filled the room as language practice blended seamlessly with cultural discovery.
