Biography

I am a screen industries scholar with interests in the cinema sector, contemporary media franchising, media technologies, franchise adaptation, marketing and promotion, and media authorship.

My recent monograph, entitled 'From Harry Potter to the Wizarding World: The Transfiguration of a Franchise' (Edinburgh University Press, 2025), traces the development of the Harry Potter franchise in the 2010s.

Teaching Summary

I teach on film, media and cultural studies across undergraduate and postgraduate degrees. My teaching is research-led and underpinned by interactive, student-centred pedagogies.

Teaching specialisms include:

- Global media franchises

- Creative and cultural industries

- Marketing and promotion

- Media technologies

- Research methods

Research Summary

My current research is defined by two strands:

1. Contemporary media franchising. I am a leading scholar in Harry Potter studies, having recently published my monograph on Potter franchising strategies in the 'post-Potter era' following the end of the books and films. I also publish on media authorship, contemporary film and television, and screen marketing.

2. Contemporary film exhibition industries. I am interested in understanding challenges facing the cinema sector in terms of audience development, promotion, funding, and digital technologies. I have worked with local East Midlands cinemas such as Broadway (Nottingham) and the Arc (Beeston) on place-based research that seeks to develop pilot studies to engage with minority audiences.
