Andrei Khlobystov and Samantha Tang were invited to present their Wonder in Carbon Land exhibit at the headquarters of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) on the 29th of April. The “EPSRC: How?” event was organised by the EPSRC Making a Difference Team. It was designed to showcase the exciting research that EPSRC funds to all their staff , and give them an opportunity to celebrate the impact that their role in EPSRC has in the world outside. Amongst other invited guests was Professor Robert Winston who visited the exhibit to find out more about carbon nanotubes and fullerenes.

Wonder in Carbon Land is an exhibit about the different forms of carbon and how nanoscale carbon material can be used for a number of different applications. The exhibit was originally created for the Royal Society Summer Exhibition in 2008 with assistance from the EPSRC. Since then it has been presented at the British Science Festival in Liverpool and is on display during some of our University Open Days. The exhibit was transported to Swindon by two of the School of Chemistry workshop technicians who had helped to build it, John Whalley and Paul Gaetto, and together with Andrei and Sam the EPSRC staff had the opportunity to see how their provision of funding could be used to produce an effective method of public engagement.
