Teaching

Teaching in the Industrial Economics Department focuses on the application of microeconomics to understand the business environment, firms, and individual decision-making.

Informed by our world-leading research and connections with businesses and regulators, we deliver a specialist BSc Industrial Economics and BSc Industrial Economics with Insurance courses. We also contribute to teaching on other undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Our modules provide students with the expertise and knowledge to answer real-world policy and business questions: How should firms price their products and services? How should firms innovate in increasingly competitive markets? How should we regulate firms' environmental impact? Who benefits from firms' merger and acquisitions? How should pay packages be designed to incentivise staff and senior management? How does consumer psychology impact the way firms promote and design their products? How should we regulate social platforms?

We have developed a diversified portfolio of modules and student assessments (exams, coursework, assessed presentations) that prepare students for a range of career paths e.g. consulting, banking, insurance, finance, and government bodies. We equip students with the confidence and capability to analyse real-world problems and present them to stakeholders.

Guest speakers

Our expert teaching is enhanced by guest lectures from visiting top practitioners.

Recent speakers have included guests from:

  • Competition and Markets Authority (UK Competition Watchdog)
  • British Standards Institution (UK Standards Body on Innovation)
  • KPMG (Economics Consultancy)
