Biography

My research interest is in using interdisciplinary approaches to identify, understand and overcome barriers to uptake in relation to win-wins for sustainable food systems. I use a mix of natural and social science techniques in my work, with a particular emphasis on stakeholder engagement and co-development. I have worked with farmers, NGOs, policy makers, and agribusinesses to understand the complexities of our food system both in the UK and internationally. I am particularly interested in conducting research with real-world impact and in policy engagement.

Teaching Summary

I currently teach students on the following degrees: Agriculture, Agricultural Business Management, Animal Science, Environmental Science, Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, and Plant Biology. I… read more

Research Summary

I work on behaviour change and adoption of win-win solutions to develop a healthy and sustainable food system, with research across the supply chain. I currently work on three core themes:

Sustainable agricultural production

I work on a range of topics relating to sustainable food production, including reducing pesticide use through the uptake of Integrated Pest Management, increasing biodiversity on farm, and the potential for crop breeding to increase the sustainability of food production. I use a variety of methods including co-creation, systems thinking (including socio-ecological systems), behaviour change frameworks, futures thinking, and participatory research.

Some current projects in this area include:

  • Voluntary biodiversity credits (NERC/ESRC)
    • I was work package co-lead in a large interdisciplinary team, which ran surveys and conducted interviews with key stakeholders in the nascent UK market to understand the potential for voluntary biodiversity credits to be taken up and create a net positive impact on biodiversity.
  • PROBITY (Innovate UK)
    • I am Nottingham PI on this project, leading a work package which focuses on understanding farmer perceptions of gene editing as a tool for building a more resilient English agricultural system. Online forums, surveys, and interviews will be used to assess potential benefits and downsides of this technology, barriers to its uptake, and opinions from a range of stakeholders, in order to inform policy makers and scientists.

Sustainable food choices

I am interested in barriers to behaviour change for more sustainable food choices, particularly among consumers motivated to reduce their meat consumption and/or increase their consumption of legumes and alternative proteins. I use the COM-B framework/ontology to identify practical and policy relevant insights, and work closely with researchers in psychology and business studies.

Current projects include:

  • Learning from each other to cope with crisis (STFC Food Network +)
    • I was PI on this recently completed project, with its final publication in progress, investigating the impacts of COVID-19 on the health and sustainability of consumers' dietary choices. We used a mix of surveys and focus groups to identify those most affected by COVID-19 and to co-create coping mechanisms. Our goal is to develop interventions and solutions to build resilience to future shocks into the UK food system.

Developing a fair and sustainable food system

I work on a range of topics related to equity within the food system, and which cut across the supply chain. For this work I use a range of participatory research methods, and often engage with local government, NGOs, businesses, and community groups as appropriate to the research question.

Current projects include:

  • Impact of nitrogen fertilisers in the agrifood value chain (Foodrise)
    • I am co-lead on this project, assessing the impact of multi-national fertiliser companies have on the agrifood value chain.
