Dr. Chiew Lin Yap is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA). She holds a multidisciplinary academic background in biology, chemistry, and chemical engineering. Since beginning her university teaching career in 2006, she has delivered a wide range of modules in chemistry and biology, spanning from Foundation to Master's level. She also supervises PhD candidates and serves as an examiner for postgraduate research degrees.

Current Research

Dr. Chiew Lin Yap's research portfolio focuses on sustainable bioprocesses and environmental technologies. Her current primary research thrust is the enhancement of microbial fuel cell (MFC) systems for wastewater treatment with simultaneous bioelectricity generation, particularly through the development of cost-effective biomass-derived electrodes and the optimization of electroactive microbial consortia.

In parallel, she conducts research on the valorization of oil palm biomass. This work encompasses the conversion of lignocellulosic waste into platform chemicals and their subsequent catalytic upgrading into high-value products, especially biofuels and fuel additives. Her research involves the design of novel heterogeneous catalysts and sustainable catalyst support materials, as well as the development of green and efficient catalytic processes.

Previously, she has undertaken research on advanced oxidation processes, specifically Fenton-based reactions, for the remediation of contaminated soils.
