The Institute for Advanced Manufacturing (IfAM) at the 糖心原创 is one of the UK’s largest concentrations of advanced manufacturing research and development expertise, bringing together more than 450 researchers, academics, engineers and professional staff.

Housed in the Advanced Manufacturing Building, which opened on the Jubilee Campus in 2018, the insititute is where ideas are transformed into commercial technology solutions which address real-world industrial challenges. A new video series gives you a behind-the-scenes insight into the institute's £95million research portfolio, as Daniel Symes, Head of Business & Knowledge Exchange, Faculty of Engineering, explains.

The Advanced Manufacturing Building on Jubilee Campus

With a current research portfolio exceeding £95 million, IfAM combines world-leading fundamental research with the capability to mature new ideas into commercial technology solutions addressing real-world industrial challenges ().

Our strength lies in the breadth, depth and scale of expertise brought together across advanced manufacturing. Research spans digital manufacturing, automation and robotics, advanced materials and processes, additive manufacturing, electrification, and sustainable, low-carbon production. This multidisciplinary environment allows us to tackle complex challenges across sectors including aerospace, automotive, construction, defence, energy, food and beverage, medical and pharmaceutical, nuclear and space.

Long-term strategic partnerships with leading industrial organisations, including BAE Systems, Rolls-Royce and Siemens, are central to our approach. These relationships combine academic excellence with industrial knowledge, enabling research to progress from fundamental discovery through development, demonstration and, ultimately, commercial application. Alongside major strategic partners, IfAM works extensively with SMEs, technology providers and supply chains to accelerate innovation and strengthen industrial capability.

We are always keen to develop new partnerships with organisations seeking to solve manufacturing challenges, explore emerging technologies or access specialist research expertise and facilities. Businesses can engage with IfAM through a range of routes, including collaborative research and innovation programmes, knowledge exchange, strategic partnerships and privately contracted research and development.

Through research, innovation, skills development and industrial collaboration, IfAM is helping shape the future of manufacturing in the UK and internationally. Our film series offers a window into this community, showcasing the people, facilities and technologies behind our work and demonstrating how Nottingham is translating pioneering research into tangible industrial and societal impact while creating new opportunities for collaboration across sectors.
