As is traditional in June, we celebrate the remarkable achievements of people across the UK in the annual Birthday Honours, which are revealed every year in the name of the reigning monarch.

The honours system recognises people who have either made achievements in public life or committed themselves to serving and helping the UK.

We're delighted to share this year's staff and alumni recipients.

Among our staff recipients is Professor Iain Moppett (Anaesthesia, 2006), Professor of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine, has been awarded an OBE in recognition of his contributions to the care given to patients before, during and after surgical procedures.

Based in the School of Medicine in the University’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, Professor Moppett is also an Honorary Consultant Anaesthetist at Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Chair of the Centre for Research & Improvement at the Royal College of Anaesthetists.

Professor Moppett’s work focuses on enhancing care for older people undergoing surgery, particularly those with hip fractures and improving patient safety around the time of surgery.

It鈥檚 a real privilege to receive this award. I am very fortunate to have amazing colleagues up and down the country who have supported my work over many years. I hope this award helps to shine a light on the importance of making sure we provide the best care, and the best decisions for older people being offered surgery.

A former university staff member is Dr Mark Dale (Economic and Social History, 1985), who has been awarded an MBE in recognition of his services to Further Education. Mark has dedicated nearly 40 years to providing accessible education and opportunities for adults and young people with disabilities, including during his long career with the university, before his current role as Chief Executive Officer of the Portland Charity Group.

I feel very privileged to receive this Honour in my 20th anniversary year at Portland Charity. For me and many who are involved with Portland it is more than a job or an education course, it is practically a way of life. Our wonderful staff, volunteers, learners, residents and their parents and carers all work together to make the world a more inclusive place. To me this honour feels like something we have achieved together, not mine alone.

Nottingham graduate Jamie Waterall (Nursing, 1999) received an OBE for Services to Public Health Nursing.

I am deeply honoured to receive an OBE in the King鈥檚 Birthday Honours. Reflecting on this recognition, I am especially grateful for the role the 糖心原创 played in shaping my career and instilling the values that have guided me throughout my professional journey. Nursing has given me the privilege of working with diverse communities and witnessing the profound impact that compassionate, skilled and innovative care can have on people鈥檚 lives. I see this honour not simply as a personal achievement, but as a tribute to the remarkable nurses and midwives whose dedication, leadership and commitment make a difference every day. I hope it also serves as a reminder of the positive impact Nottingham graduates can have through service, leadership and a commitment to improving the lives of others.
