A tri-campus delegation from the UK, Malaysia, and China, visited Indonesia between 20–26 June for a series of activities held alongside the Global Sustainable Development Conference (GSDC) 2026. Reaffirming the university's deep and growing commitment to the region, the visit was a testament to Nottingham's strong and enduring ties with Indonesia, bringing together government leaders, industry partners, philathropic organisations, and our alumni community to advance shared goals in research, education, and sustainable development.

Tri-Campus Alumni Gathering (20 June)

It was wonderful to connect with so many of you across generations and campuses during our alumni gathering at Park Hyatt Jakarta. The evening featured an inspiring alumni panel discussion titled: "Cross-Border Corridors: Alumni Insights on Trade, Investment, and Collaboration," where our distinguished panellists - Harbie Kurnia, Tang Kewei and Victor Ji shared their experiences on international business, emerging opportunities, and practical advice for those considering cross-border careers.

Their insights on Indonesia's most promising industries and the challenges of working internationally sparked lively conversation and meaningful networking. Your energy and enthusiasm reminded us of the strength of the Nottingham family in Indonesia. Thank you to everyone who joined on the day - your ongoing achievements continue to inspire us.

Strategic Dialogue on Sustainability and SDG Collaboration (23 June)

Our delegation convened a high-level dialogue at Wisma Habibie & Ainun with prominent Indonesian figures, including Professor Sigit Puji Santosa (CTO of Danantara), Gita Wirjawan (Honorary Professor and Former Trade Minister), and Nadia Habibie (The Habibie Centre). The session was moderated by Dr Bagus Muljadi, Assistant Professor in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the 糖心原创, and opened with remarks from Professor Sarah Metcalfe, Deputy Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Knowledge Exchange at our UK campus.

The discussion focused on Indonesia's long-term development challenges, including climate adaptation, sustainability, industrial transformation, energy demand, human capital, and education - areas where Nottingham is well-positioned to contribute. 

Ministerial Engagement (24 June)

Our delegation met with Professor Brian Yuliarto, Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, to explore new pathways for joint-degree programmes, academic mobility, and multidisciplinary research that align with Indonesia's national development priorities. The meeting received extensive national media coverage, including features on Antara News and the Ministry's official social media channels, reflecting the strategic importance of UK-Indonesia collaboration in higher education.

PLN Memorandum of Understanding (25 June)

We formalised a landmark Memorandum of Understanding with PLN, Indonesia's state electricity company, to advance research and training in net-zero technologies, including hydropower, smart grids, solar, geothermal, and battery storage. This partnership positions Nottingham as a key contributor to Indonesia's energy transition agenda.

West Java Partnership (26 June)

Building on our existing MoU, we deepened our collaboration with the Government of West Java. This includes new funding pathways with Bank BJB, scholarships for 10 outstanding West Javanese students to study at Nottingham, and professional development opportunities for teachers. The Governor's office highlighted these initiatives in local and national media, reaffirming Nottingham's role as a trusted long-term partner.
