Biography

Qi received her PhD from the 糖心原创 in 2015 and joined the School of Sociology and Social Policy in 2022. Before taking up this position, she was a Senior Lecturer at the University of Hertfordshire.

Expertise Summary

Qi's research expertise lies in criminal sentencing, probation, digital feminism and criminal records, digital surveillance and private policing, and Southern criminology.

Research Summary

Qi's current research focuses on two main areas:

1. criminal justice policy and reform in China, including the development of criminal justice social work, probation and rehabilitation, youth justice, criminal records, and resistance to penal populism; and
2. criminal sentencing in England and Wales, with particular attention to the gap between research evidence and practitioners' perceptions.

Past Research

Qi has undertaken research for the Sentencing Council for England and Wales, focusing on equality and diversity issues in sentencing guidelines and sentencing practices

Qi also did research on the evolution of criminal sentencing in China, judicial decision-making in the suspension of prison sentences, and the enforcement of suspended sentences by social workers and government officers. She has also examined issues relating to carceral feminism and the introduction of sex offender registration in China, as well as surveillance and private policing practices in the country.
