Biography
I began my career in education in 2005 and have worked in higher education since 2014. My work focuses primarily on academic literacy and English for Academic Purposes (EAP), supporting students to develop the academic and communication skills they need to engage effectively with disciplinary knowledge and practices. I provide this support through lectures, workshops, teaching sessions and individual consultations.
Much of my EAP work focuses on genre analysis and move analysis, exploring how texts are structured and how writers use language to achieve particular communicative purposes within academic and disciplinary contexts. I am particularly interested in how these approaches can help students understand the expectations and conventions of academic writing within their own disciplines.
I also provide extensive academic literacy support in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering and the School of Health Sciences. My previous background in physics provides a useful foundation for this work, particularly in understanding the ways in which students in scientific and technical disciplines are expected to construct and communicate knowledge. This has led to a particular interest in the development of scientific argumentation and in supporting students to construct effective, evidence-based arguments.
My other research interests include the formation of cohesive and effective communities in online teaching environments, as well as approaches to preparing for and delivering effective lectures.
