Research Summary

Pluripotency in mammalian embryos and in culture

My research interest is pluripotent cell state in early embryos and captured ones in vitro. Pluripotency exists in early mammalian embryos but transiently. This period is further dissected into three consecutive phases termed, "naive", "formative" and "primed". These three phases are continuum but functionally distinct. We want to understand how cells transit through these phases, how they are captured molecularly and what kinds of gene regulatory network and epigenetic modification provide the functional differences. We will address the mechanisms of pluripotency and stem cell culture including mouse, livestock and human.
