Nottingham element: George Byron
George Gordon Byron, or Lord Byron was the most flamboyant and notorious of the major romantic poets. Among his best-known works are the narrative poems Childe Harold's Pilgrimage and Don Juan. Lord Byron is also famous for the way he lived his life. He was a dandy, living extravagantly, with many love affairs and debts.
When Byron's great-uncle, , died on 21 May 1798, the 10-year-old boy became the sixth Baron Byron of and inherited the ancestral home, , in Nottinghamshire. His mother proudly took him to England, but the Abbey was in an embarrassing state of disrepair and, rather than living there, she decided to lease it to , among others, during Byron's adolescence.
