History secure funding to support four feasability studies
Description
The Department of History has secured more than £55,000 to support four feasibility studies. These are funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council's (AHRC), Creative Economy Knowledge Exchange (CEKE) fund, through the project 'Assets, Archives and Audiences', headed by Professor Steve Benford (Computer Science).

Success for History volunteering project
Description
The school's volunteering project, has proven to be a great success this year for all involved. Run in partnership with the History Society, Lisa Owen from Community Partnerships and Cascade, the project attracted 48 student volunteers who got involved in organising and running History sessions for children in 13 primary and secondary schools across Nottingham.

Successful First Year of Ningbo Mentoring Module

This year, for the first time, the Department of History offered a Nottingham Advantage Award (NAA) module which focused on mentoring Ningbo students. Over the last few years, the Department has run a successful mentoring programme for students who arrive in Nottingham from the Ningbo campus.

Associate professor features on front page news article of Tokyo Shinbun
Description
Together with two co-translators (one, Julie Carpenter pictured on the left), I appeared in the leading article on the front page of the Tokyo Shinbun newspaper on 14 January 2013 (a leading Tokyo newspaper). This announced the publication of the English translation of the famous Japanese historian Shiba Ryotaro's multi-volume Saka no Ue no Kumo under the title Clouds Above the Hill.

Dr Andrew Cobbing to feature on BBC Radio 4 - Thursday April
Description
On Thursday 4 April, associate professor at The ÌÇÐÄÔ´´ Dr Andrew Cobbing will be talking with two other discussants on Melvyn Bragg's 'In Our Time' programme on BBC Radio 4. Richard Bowring and Rebekah Clements from Cambridge will join Andrew to deliberate the topic: Is 'Sakoku' - Japan's self-imposed seclusion under Tokugawa rule. To hear the programme tune in at 9:00am Thursday 4 April.

Marie Curie Career Integration Grant aids weather pattern research
Description
The Marie Curie Career Integration Grant (CIG) is a highly competitive European award to help scholars move countries in pursuit of their research projects. Conor Kostick, who is currently here from Dublin as a Nottingham Advanced Research Fellow, recently won the maximum CIG award of €100,000. Conor hopes to resolve major questions about patterns of weather extremes and societal stress by looking at the historical evidence from 400 - 1000 CE.

Associate Professor Ross Balzaretti's book to be published by Bloomsbury
Description
Ross Balzaretti's book on Dark Age Liguria is to be published on the 28th March by Bloomsbury. It is the first book in any language that looks at the transition from the Roman Empire to early Middle Ages - from an unaccustomed, regional perspective.
